UNIT 3 MOVING IMAGE PRODUCTION: CASE STUDY (FINAL)
In this case study my demographic is going to be teenagers.
The things that a teenager likes to to do are going out with their friends and doing their personal hobbies for example playing sports, gaming and shopping however different people like different things so some people may like going to school for example. The dislikes of teenagers are usually going to school, doing homework, having to do chores around the house.
Sitcoms
The sitcom I have chosen is Gavin and Stacey. The reason I have chosen this sitcom is because it contains many funny jokes and appeals to the teenagers. The reason Gavin and Stacey appeals to teenagers is because teenagers want to see what sort of problems people come to face in the real world and find it funny because they are over exaggerated in the way they have to or have chosen deal with these problems.
For example when Nessa is giving birth, Smithy and Gavin race against the clock to get to the hospital but get stopped to pay the toll. They don't have enough money so they break through the barrier then get stopped by the police because they didn't pay. This situation is funny because the police officer agrees they did the right thing, but wont stop talking. This clearly frustrates Gavin and Smithy as they are rushing to get to the hospital , but they don't want to be rude and drive away from the police officer.
The purpose of Gavin and Stacey is to entertain you with everyday problems people come up against in the real world for example getting stuck in traffic when trying to get some where fast.
The audience of sitcoms are working aged people (16-34). I know this because the sitcom I have chosen, Gavin and Stacey, appeals to the BBC 3 target audience . These people are people who watch these shows are people that want to sit back and relax in the evenings after a hards day work and be entertained by what they are watching.
Genre Conventions
Typical Conventions of sitcoms would be a family or a bunch of friends having everyday situations that the audience can relate to and resolving them in a humorous manor. For example in Gavin and Stacey they are family and friends and every episode come to face a new issue or problem eg a rush to get some where.
Narrative Structure
Sitcoms are always a circular narrative structure that usually starts with ether a problem which make s disequilibrium that they discuss and decide to do something about or they are doing something when a problem occurs. They then tackle the problem causing havoc and funny situations which they then have to fix as well. When the programme finishes it ends with a them resolving the problem, restoring equilibrium and completing circular narrative once again.
Style and Tone
Sitcoms are comedy set in a certain situation (situation comedy) . A sitcom is a television or radio series in which the same set of characters are involved in various amusing situations this was (Wikipedia Sitcom.) I believe this finding is correct because it explains what a situation comedy is on a whole and what they do. Sitcoms generally are based on real life situations however are exaggerated and are show in a light hearted way making the situations funny and entertaining eg trying for a baby.
Representation
People who watch sitcoms are usually males and females of a working age (16+) who come home to relax. Sitcoms are set in 'real life' situations such as this is done by using real life things and problems eg. a family or group of friends. This is done so that the viewers maybe able to relate to the characters of the programme and will enjoy it more. For example in Gavin an Stacey the family and friends go to Nessa's wedding but Smithy (Nessa's ex and Gavin's best mate) doesn't want to go because it will be awkward between them. This is funny because of the way that Nessa and Smithy react around one another. Gavin and Stacey uses a lot of stereotypes for example it uses Essex/Welsh stereotypes . This is so that the audience can relate to the the show and enjoy it more.
Themes/Messages/Values
The point of the show is to entertain and to show that even the most difficult problems can be resolved. This is done by each episode the series having a new problem to over come and is made entertaining by using everyday peoples lifestyles and combining them with comedy.
Factual Programming
The factual programme I have chosen to use is Top Gear because it appeals to teenagers. I know this because I watch it as well as some of my friends. The reason it appeals to teenagers is because it includes cars and many fun challenges with some comedy, which teenagers find entertaining because it is funny and factual at the same time.
For example in one episode Jeremy Clarkson drives a Robin Reliant. The episode is funny and factual because Jeremy Clarkson keeps on crashing and tipping over while giving out facts about the vehicle he is driving.
The purpose of Top Gear is to entertain you in a fun way while informing and educating you about cars and what their history and what the does for example in one episode Richard Hammond drives a new Porsche while showing off the car and give out he cars details.
The audience of Top Gear is mainly older males aged (20+) who like cars and are working class or higher. Top Gear promotes an aspirational lifestyle (car choice).
Genre conventions
Conventions of a factual program would be a product or thing which the program tells you facts about and show it of in etheir a scary or cool way depending on what the programme is educating you about for example Top Gear educates you on cars while making the show funny (Entertaining).
Narrative Structure
The narrative structure of a factual programme is the show normally starts with a piece to camera or a voice over footage where the hosts start showing of a problem or product. They then inform you and educate you on the product or problem using a voice over while showing footage sometimes it may even be archive footage. At the end of each episode they tell you want they will be showing of next episode and a clip of next weeks episode. For example Top Gear talk about a cars by starting with a piece to camera then using a voice over while showing footage of the car. they also mid way through the show do interviews with famous people for example Jameson Button (F-1 driver). Top Gear then at the end of the episode they say 'next week we will be showing off a ...'
Style and Tone
A factual program is programming based of facts and captures a large and varied target audience in a formal manner. For example Top Gear show of there cars in a lighthearted and comedy style.
Representation
The representation of Top Gear is older manly men aged roughly (20 - 65) who like cars. Factual programmes often show of the real world with no glamour just what's behind the scenes for example showing what is happening to are forests and the nature around us. However, Top Gear shows an aspirational lifestyle by showing off cars a minority of people can afford so that people want the cars but cant buy them.
Themes/Messages/Values
The themes of Top Gear is promoting a life style which some people may not be able to afford however they can experience it through the programme.
Advertising
The advert I have chosen to use is the Mercedes-Benz TV adverts. The reason I have chosen this advert is because this advert is appealing to a teenage audience although the advert may not be targeted at teenagers, teenagers are the adverts secondary audience. This is because it is funny, random and catchy.
The purpose of the advert is to make the viewer aware of the product and like the product, then sell the viewer their product within a 30 second time slot. They make there advert entertain so that it is easy to remember and will not be forgotten.

The audience of these adverts are working people who are aged 18 or up however they get a secondary audience who are teenagers and younger because they are funny and entertaining to watch so that you like the product and will show your parents so they buy the product. For example the Mercedes - benz advert does this.

Genre Conventions
The conventions of a advert are a catchy song, their product being shown off several times and their slogan. These adverts usually last 30 seconds. This is done so that they can sell you their product within 30 seconds.
Narrative Structure
The narrative structure of an advert is a 30 second clip designed to make the viewer buy the product this is usually done by a problem or challenge which can't been beaten then a product is eaten, used or drunk so that a person can step up to face the problem or challenge. At the end of the adverts there is always a product shot so that you can see the product not just parts of it. These adverts are to inform you about their product and its key features in different manors eg in some cases they can be to entertain and make you want to buy the product while explaining a key feature of their product like the Mercedes - Benz advert does. The Mercedes - Benz advert shows of the stability of the car or van by using a chickens head staying still while their bodies move.
Style and Tone
The style of a advert is quite often light hearted and made to make want want buy the product. For example in the Mercedes - Benz advert uses a light hearted attempt to capture the viewers attention and make it easy to remember so they don't forget about it.
Representation
The representation of the Mercedes Benz advert is mainly younger working class people with children. I Believe this as it contains stupid humor that children find funny while getting a key point over to the audience.
Themes/Messages/Values
The themes of adverts are promoting a life style choice and telling you should buy this. This is done by using many different slogans for the products for example Mercedes - Benz is 'THE BEST OR NOTHING'.
The purpose of all of these different types of media are to entertain, inform and educate. All of these types of media use the same techniques to do something different whether it is sell a product to entertain or educate a viewer.
